What is the Calico Cafe?

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit cat cafe!

We have a full service coffee shop in the front room of the cafe and in the back is our cat lounge with 8 adorable and adoptable cats.

The cat lounge and the coffee shop (and our small kitchen/hallway in between) are totally separate so you will not see any kitties where we make our delicious drinks and snacks.

For a small donation of $5 you can spend a half hour in our relaxing cat room surrounded by cats or you can stop in for a made to order coffee and baked good. Both things help us towards our mission of helping adult cats find homes and getting community cats spayed and neutered.

Meet the cats

  • Hennessy

Hennessy, brother of Amaretto, is a sweet boy who is always down for some pats. He’s now a little over a year old has been with the shelter since he was a kitten which is crazy! Him and his sister love to snuggle and play and would make a great fit in any home. How can you say no to the cute little half mustaches??

  • Amaretto

Tiny little Amaretto, sister of Hennessy, may be a little more on the shy side compared to her brother, but she is equally as sweet. She will follow you around very loudly asking for pets until she gets them. Her and her brother are just over a year old and have been at the shelter since they were kittens! They would both make a great fit for any home and have the cutest little mustaches.

  • Moshannon

Moshannon may be a little shy at first but she is extremely sweet. She loves to be pet and she likes to play but is sometimes a little shy around her rambunctious roommates. Moshannon was one of Big Daddy’s ladies and now that she’s raised her kittens she is ready to settle down!

  • Maddy

Maddy is a sweet and beautiful boy. He has a very unique looking face, possibly from a siamese or bengal getting into the colony he came from! He can be a tad shy at times but he is very affectionate and would make a great addition to any home.

  • Dani Kat

Dani Kat is a little shy but she is super sweet. She will let you pet her endlessly and is the perfect cat to hang out and watch Netflix with. She won’t even judge you for rewatching your comfort show for the 100th time!

  • Oopsie

Oopsie is a little sweeter than her sassy sister but is still a little shy at times. She loves to be pet and cuddle with humans and other kitties!

  • Whoopsie

Whoopsie has a little bit of a sassy side but overall she’s a super sweet cat. If another kitty gets in her space she may hiss and let them know, but when it comes to humans she loves to get pets and will cuddle up to you.

  • Frank

Frank is a bit of a silly cat. He is very friendly but he only likes to be scratched on his butt, and sometimes even that is questionable. He loves to rub on your legs but if you try to scratch his head he will run.

Directions

Parking: Parking on Pickering Street is unfortunately not the best. The cafe is sandwiched between Bella Nails and Resolute Custom Tattoo so parking fills up quickly. If you are okay with a bit of a walk, I recommend parking on Main Street and walking down the hill. If not, please try to aim for less busy hours like very early morning or Friday evening. Our location is unfortunately not handicap accessible because of street parking and steps. There are two steps to get back to the cat room so please keep that in mind.

From Clarion: If you come from I-80 get off at the Brookville exit and make a right. At the light by Sheetz make a left and follow down the hill. From 322 go straight past Sheetz. Go straight through the first light on Main Street at the bottom of the hill. At the second light make a right and The Calico Cafe will be on your right.

From Dubois: If you come from I-80 get off the Hazen exit and make a left. Go straight at the first two lights. At the light on Main Street, make a left and the Calico Cafe will be on your right.

From Punxsutawney: Go past Giant Eagle to the light at the top of the hill. Make a right onto Main Street. At the next light, make a right and the Calico Cafe will be on your right.

CAT LOUNGE RULES

All or most of our cats do have claws and pointy teeth. Even the nicest cats in the world are still sensitive, so please follow these rules to ensure your safety and the safety of our cats.

If you have any questions about what is and is not okay, please feel free to ask our staff!

  1. Do not feed the cats human food.

  2. Do not touch the cats’ tummies or feet. Do not pull on the cats tails and do not be too rough with them.

  3. Do not pick up the cats. If a cat jumps on your lap that is fine but absolutely no picking them up.

  4. Be careful playing with the cats’ with your hands or feet. Use a toy when possible to avoid getting scratched or bitten. Our cats are friendly but sometimes when they get playful they can be less careful.

  5. The room marked “EMPLOYEES ONLY” with the cat door is strictly off limits.

FAQs

  • Originating in Taiwan in 1998, cat cafes have become very popular across the globe and for good reason! Who wouldn’t love to hang out with kitties while they enjoy delicious treats. Plus to top it all off, cat cafes are a great way for shelter cats to find their forever homes.

I tend to describe my cafe as a “coffee bar and cat lounge”. No, my cats are not allowed in the food and beverage area (the inspector would not be very happy about that!) You are allowed to bring your beverages and treats when you visit the cat lounge, just watch out for our four legged foodies who may try to sample some.

  • The $5 you pay for the cat room is a donation that keeps the cafe going.

Our cat room is not only to help people destress and find a kitty to love, it is a wonderful environment for kitties to thrive. They're in a smaller group so they're less likely to get sick and the cat room is much more similar to a home than the shelter (even our fabulous shelter with big pens!)

We also have plans to help more neighborhood kitties in the future once we have enough resources.

Keep this all in mind when you're thinking about visiting the cat lounge. The cat room fee is our livelihood.

We really appreciate everyone who supports us!

  • I’m afraid not. Cafe residents only!

  • We are now a 501(c)(3) non-profit!

You can help by donating supplies or money to help us continue to take care of our kitties and expand in the future.

  • Our cats are all adoptable cats from the shelter and we strongly promote spaying and neutering the local cat population. If you have found yourself with kittens, we would be happy to direct you to the next spay and neuter clinic!

  • There are so many older sweet cats at the shelter who constantly get passed up for the kittens every year. For this reason we want to help show why these kitties deserve their furever homes as much as the kittens!

  • The Calico Cafe is not a shelter. If you need help with a cat please contact the rescues in your area but do know that most of them are completely overwhelmed. We would be happy to help you find a low cost spay and neuter clinic for your cats or include you in our next clinic trip.

Meet the Owner

Hi, I’m Krista! I have had the dream of opening some kind of cafe for years. When I learned about cat cafes I thought: “That’s it!”

I have always loved cats. From feeding strays as a child to now owning two cats, fostering here and there, and working with Clarion PAWs, it only seemed natural to combine my love of cats and coffee and bring it to my small town! You might be thinking “Why Brookville?” Well, for one, that’s where I live and I don’t like a long commute… but the bigger reason is we have a big community of cat lovers (and cats) here, so it seemed like a perfect fit!
